Garage Door Opener Brands: Compatibility Guide for Atlanta Homeowners
LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman dominate the garage door opener market, and each uses its own radio technology - which is why a remote from one brand usually won't work with another brand's opener. Understanding these differences saves you from buying the wrong remote or keypad.

The major opener brands and their technology
LiftMaster and Chamberlain are sister brands (both made by the Chamberlain Group) and share Security+ rolling-code technology, which changes the remote's code with every use for security. Genie uses its own Intellicode rolling-code system. Older Craftsman openers were made by Chamberlain and often share compatibility with LiftMaster/Chamberlain accessories of the same era.
What matters for you: within the LiftMaster/Chamberlain family, many remotes and keypads are cross-compatible if they're the same Security+ generation (Security+ vs. Security+ 2.0). Across to Genie or other brands, you'll need a universal remote instead.
- LiftMaster / Chamberlain - Security+ and Security+ 2.0 rolling codes
- Genie - Intellicode rolling-code technology
- Craftsman - many models built by Chamberlain; check the learn-button color
- Older dip-switch openers - fixed codes; remotes must match the switch pattern
- Universal remotes - learn most major brands' codes for cross-brand use
Why your remote stopped working - or never worked
The most common story: someone buys a brand-name remote that doesn't match their opener's brand or Security+ generation. A Security+ 2.0 remote won't pair with an original Security+ opener, and no LiftMaster remote will ever pair with a Genie opener - they're speaking different radio languages.
Universal remotes solve this by learning the opener's code during setup. They're the right choice when you want one remote for two different-brand doors, or when your opener's brand is uncertain. A pro can identify your opener's brand and generation in seconds and hand you the correct remote.
Smart features: MyQ, Aladdin Connect, and app control
LiftMaster and Chamberlain offer MyQ smart control - open, close, and monitor the door from your phone, get alerts, and set schedules. Genie's equivalent is Aladdin Connect. Both generally require Wi-Fi coverage at the garage and the brand's app.
Smart features can often be added to an existing compatible opener with a smart hub accessory rather than replacing the whole unit - a much cheaper upgrade. If your opener predates smart compatibility (roughly pre-2011 for most brands), replacement with a smart-ready model is the cleaner path.
Choosing the right replacement opener
When repair stops making sense - typically at 12-15 years, or when parts are unavailable - replacement openers come in chain drive (affordable, noisier), belt drive (quiet, best for attached garages), screw drive, and wall-mount jackshaft (frees ceiling space, ideal for high-lift doors).
Match the horsepower to the door: 1/2 HP handles most standard doors, 3/4 HP suits heavier wood or insulated doors. The pro we connect you with will size the opener to your door, install it, and program your remotes and keypads - free estimate before any work.
